Curtin University Singapore Alumni Chapter (CUSAC) was honoured to be invited to the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce (SICC) Annual General Meeting Luncheon, held on 27 June 2025 at Conrad Singapore Marina Bay. Curtin University was one of the proud sponsors of this prestigious event.

Representing CUSAC at the luncheon were:

  • Mr James Chen – President

  • Ms Kemmy Koh – Secretary

  • Mr Paul Tham – Vice President

Insightful Dialogue on Singapore’s Challenges & Resilience

The highlight of the event was an impactful one-on-one panel session with Guest of Honour, Minister for Health Mr Ong Ye Kung, who engaged the audience with his thoughtful perspectives on some of Singapore’s most pressing issues.

Topics covered during the discussion included:

  •  Mental Health

  •  Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Jobs

  •  Rising Cost of Living

  • Retirement & Healthcare Sustainability

  • Declining Birth Rates and Women’s Evolving Roles

Minister Ong candidly addressed the growing trend of declining childbirth rates in Singapore, attributing part of the shift to the increasing independence and empowerment of women, who now have more career and lifestyle choices than ever before. While a positive reflection of gender progress, this demographic shift presents long-term implications for Singapore’s population sustainability, workforce structure, and economic vitality. It is a delicate balance the country must continue navigating through thoughtful policy and societal support.

Global Strength Through Connectivity and Digital Leadership

Mr Ong also emphasized Singapore’s unique global positioning:

  • Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) and Changi Airport provide highly efficient access to international markets, enabling the smooth flow of goods, services, and people across borders. This strategic connectivity is critical for sectors like logistics, finance, e-commerce, and advanced manufacturing.

  • Singapore’s role as a digital hub is only growing stronger. With robust cybersecurity infrastructure, pro-innovation policies, and a flourishing tech ecosystem, the nation continues to attract global digital companies, data centers, and entrepreneurial talent. This strengthens its edge in the digital economy and secures future growth.

A Spirit of Determination

One of the most resonant messages of the day came from Minister Ong:

“The more problems we face, the more we have to strive forward.”

His words were a rallying call for resilience and collective problem-solving in the face of evolving national and global challenges.
